Estimated EPA highway rating for the car is 40 mpg (5.88 Gerdes left San Diego, CA on 26 December 2010 and arrived on Jekyll Island, GA on 1 January 1, 2011. CleanMPG’s hypermiler Wayne Gerdes recently completed a cross-country drive in the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, averaging 61.42 miles per gallon (3.83 miles (1,965 km).

The third phase of a SDG&E multi-year in-use study on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles showed that plug-in hybrids offer significant improvements in gas mileage and reductions in emissions when compared with standard hybrid-electric and gasoline internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Hyundai will introduce a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to the market in 2012, according to Dr. Byungsoon Min, of Hyundai Motor Company R&D Center, presenting at the SAE 2010 Hybrid Vehicle Technologies Symposium in San Diego this week. Earlier post.). Hyundai says that vehicle range is 652 miles (1,049 km).
