The Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf earned the highest safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the first US crash test evaluations of plug-in electric cars. IIHS says that the result demonstrates that automakers are using the same safety engineering in new electric cars as they do in gasoline-powered vehicles.

Vehicles eligible under the new area of interest #4 include: Light-, Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles (LMHDV) using EPACT alternative fuels.

Out in the desert as part of Burning Man , our encampment, Snow Koan Solar, is setting up a solar photovoltaic EV Charging Station (at 7:30 and Desert) for electric scooters, golf carts, sofas and barstools. The electric sofas and scooters were so much cooler - and quieter - than the gasoline powered stinkers that predominate.

Last year Oregon had also aggressively negotiated with the Chinese carmaker, BYD , to manufacture its line of plug-in hybrids in the state for sale in the U.S.) Ted Kulongoski behind the wheel of Nissan’s prototype electric vehicle.
