The third phase of a SDG&E multi-year in-use study on plug-in hybrid electric vehicles showed that plug-in hybrids offer significant improvements in gas mileage and reductions in emissions when compared with standard hybrid-electric and gasoline internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Fuel-saving gasoline-electric hybrid cars don't save as much fuel as thought, according to new government fuel-economy ratings available to the public for the first time. But now it's possible to tell what rating 2007 and older models would get using the 2008 standards.

A month or so ago word was Toyota was postponing the new generation Lithium Prius. As if to confirm that notion, recently a Toyota spokesman in DC was denigrating plug-in hybrids as Hymotion/A123 and Rob Lowe were making a plug-in splash in Congressman Ed Markey's global warming committee.

Those who think they are the natural successor for full hybrids as we continue the movement towards lower emission driving will be thrilled with Volvo’s plans to unveil a plug-in hybrid car by 2012 (see article ). Does Toyota have a point?
