Ballard Power Systems and First Mode announced a purchase order for Ballard to supply First Mode with 30 hydrogen fuel cell modules—totaling 3 megawatts—to power several hybrid hydrogen and battery ultra-class mining haul trucks. These trucks are estimated to save 2,600 tons of diesel fuel each year.

Universal Hydrogen Co. earlier post ) has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with ACIA Aero Leasing (ACIA), a regional aircraft lessor with offices in Ireland, France, Canada, Mauritius, and South Africa. The conversion consists of a fuel cell electric powertrain that replaces the existing turboprop engines.

Starfire Energy, a Colorado-based developer of modular chemical plants for the carbon-free production of ammonia and hydrogen, has closed a major funding round. Ammonia offers an energy density comparable to fossil fuels and significantly higher than Li-ion batteries and compressed or liquid hydrogen.

Steel is responsible for around 7% of man-made greenhouse gas emissions every year and is one of the world’s most polluting industries. This would be a major shift in the type of furnaces and fuels used to produce steel.

Airbus and South Africa’s National Aerospace Centre will jointly fund research by Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) into the application of fuel cells on airliners. With demand for air transport doubling every 15 years, the global airline industry will require nearly 30,000 new aircraft (over 100 seats) by 2032.
