General Motors is preparing to launch two more extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), CEO Dan Akerson told reporters on the sidelines of the 2011 Automotive News World Congress. Detroit Free Press.

The extended range electric vehicle drive system by Raser Technologies and its development partner FEV is targeted at providing up to 40 miles all-electric range for SUVs and light trucks. A 100 kW Rase Symetron generator, driven by a GM Ecotec 2.0L SIDI turbocharged engine provides electrical power.

Cadillac will add a Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) propulsion system to its upcoming range-topping CT6 sedan, to be manufactured at the new Shanghai GM Cadillac plant, Pudong Jinqiao, China. The new PHEV version of the CT6 will be capable of greater than 60 km (32.4 ELR is not offered in the Chinese market.).

General Motors has released a white paper that evaluates the CO 2 reduction potential of extended-range electric vehicles (E-REVs) as well as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), in combination with multiple vehicle charging scenarios, as compared to conventional hybrids.

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. GM’s identify in the US starts with its four core brands.

Ford has done it's share of electric cars, including the Ranger EV and Th!nk Plans for a 2012 general release of the PHEV Escape did not wow anyone. Electrification, a buzz-word at rival GM, didn't appear to be gaining much headway in Dearborn. Of course Ford needed some plan to deal with last year's high gas prices.
