Swedish automaker Volvo has rolled out its last diesel-powered vehicle, after a 45-year relationship with the powertrain and cranking out millions of diesel cars. Between 2012 and 2016, diesel accounted for half of the company’s global sales. But those days are over now as the company moves toward an all-electric future.

Petrol-only vehicles, and HEVs, were essentially flat YoY, and diesels were down by over a third. Diesel share of the market reached a near record low of 7.6% (only December ’22 was lower, at 6.7%). Petrol share looks set to regularly slide under 20% in Q3 or Q4 this year. What are your thoughts on Sweden’s EV transition?

As expected, the combination of fewer diesel registrations and more SUVs continued to have an impact on emissions. Despite an increase of EV models contributing positively to emission levels, the move away from diesel had a negative impact, one that the market could not offset. In future, with greater use of lower carbon electricity in the European mix the typical GHG emissions saving of BEVs relative to ICEVs will increase.

Sweden’s auto market saw plugin electric vehicle share continue to grow strongly in December, reaching a record 74.6%, up from 60.7% Combustion-only powertrains’ (petrol and diesel) share in December fell to a record low of 18.7%, compared to 32.3% Sweden’s Best Selling BEVs. year on year.
