Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have quantified the fuel economy effects of some common driver practices and vehicle accessories or alterations—including underinflated tires, open windows, and rooftop and hitch-mounted cargo. They presented their results in a paper at SAE 2014 World Congress in Detroit.

At the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Annual Merit Review meeting in Washington, DC last week, Michael Ruth from Cummins noted that the DOE program target for the project is a fuel economy (CAFE) target of 26 mpg (9.05 l/100 km), and as such would not meet the GHG requirement of 28 mpg (8.4 Earlier post.). From October 2007 to April 2009, the average fuel economy of purchased new light-duty vehicles improved from 20.2 mpg US (11.6 mpg (11 L/100km) in April 2009. Sivak and Schoettle performed two regression analyses, one focusing on the number of vehicles purchased and the other one on their rated fuel economy.
