The City of Oakland, California has begun filling up its vehicles with Neste’s NEXBTL renewable diesel in order to reduce the emissions of their municipal fleet. Oakland is the first major US city to convert their entire fleet to renewable diesel.

Since forming in 2013, Argent Materials, a San Francisco Bay Area recycler of concrete and asphalt, and supplier of aggregate such as crushed rock, entry, cutback, sand, backfill and base rock for construction projects, has diverted more than a billion pounds of waste from local landfills.

The project will use Genifuel hydrothermal processing technology (HTP) to convert wastewater solids into renewable natural gas as well as liquid fuels. HTP uses subcritical water and pressure (350 °C and 207 bar) to convert the wet organics into crude oil and natural gas. Lipids, proteins, and carbs are converted to oil.

An alternative to electrolysis is to use organic waste by extracting hydrogen from rotting food or sewage. Last year it put 30 of its heavy-duty XCIENT trucks on the road in California to haul freight from ports in Oakland and Richmond. By the end of 2024 Hyundai it expects to have another plant convert sewage into hydrogen.

AC Transit will construct a new hydrogen bus fueling station in Oakland. BioStar Systems is partnering with Sonoma County Water Agency and Sonoma County Transit to produce 148,000 cubic feet per day of pipeline quality biomethane from dairy waste and food processor waste to support the Sonoma County Transit natural gas fleet.
