The consortium is being led by the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation ( WERF ). The project will use Genifuel hydrothermal processing technology (HTP) to convert wastewater solids into renewable natural gas as well as liquid fuels. Lipids, proteins, and carbs are converted to oil. The consortium also includes Genifuel Corp.

The program is slated to invest approximately $90 million during this fiscal year to encourage the development and use of new technologies and alternative and renewable fuels, with the goal of reducing dependence on foreign oil and improving the environment. GEKOT will integrate its technical solutions package into Razor electric scooters soon to be deployed on the campus of Oakland University. Additionally, its sensing and AI capabilities monitor the road and help to prevent accidents.
