Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have shown that sugarcane juice is a good feedstock for biodiesel production, when used to support the growth of the alga Chlorella protothecoides by heterotrophic fermentation. Conversion ratios of sugar/biomass and sugar/oil using SCH were 15.2 higher than that using glucose, respectively.

IH 2 technology is a continuous catalytic thermo-chemical process which produces fungible hydrocarbon transportation fuels from agricultural, forest and sorted municipal residues. The plant will be designed with the potential to convert 500 tonnes/day of dry bagasse into approximately 150 tonnes/day of liquid hydrocarbon transportation fuel.

To process the soluble sugars that accumulate in the plants, the sorghum juice was first extracted from the stems and concentrated into sugar syrup by Ceres. The pilot-scale project use both free (soluble) sugars and biomass (cellulosic) sugars from Ceres’ sweet sorghum hybrids grown in Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana and Tennessee.
