Volvo Buses and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have demonstrated the world’s first 12-meter autonomous electric bus. Plans are in place to test the bus on NTU campus and to extend the route beyond the university. The Volvo bus will soon begin trials on the NTU campus.

ST Engineering announced several initiatives to advance Singapore’s Smart Mobility 2030 vision of a smart transportation network and to strengthen its leadership in the development of autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. ST Kinetics’ autonomous buses will be one of the first in Singapore to operate on public roads.

NXP Semiconductors has signed an agreement with Singapore’s Nanyang Technology University (NTU) to establish a real-world smart mobility test bed on the NTU campus. It is also a step to accelerate the introduction of life-saving vehicle communications globally.

In addition to Delphi ( earlier post ), Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has also selected nuTonomy to begin trials of an autonomous mobility-on-demand transportation service. BMW Group and Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) launched a new electromobility research program, involving the all-electric BMW i3 and plug-in hybrid sports car BMW i8. The city-state also has high connectivity and a tech-savvy population, which makes it more receptive towards new cutting-edge technology.

In 2000, at a trade fair in Germany, an obscure Singapore company called Trek 2000 unveiled a solid-state memory chip encased in plastic and attached to a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector. Even in his home of Singapore, few people know of Tan or Trek. It was called the ThumbDrive. Today it is familiar worldwide.
