The two-minute video, the first to show the naturally-aspirated one-liter gasoline prototype engine in operation, provides a view of the engine as it undergoes testing, proving the concept of Firing After Top Dead Center. A split-cycle engine is essentially an air compressor on one side with a combustion chamber on the other.

The wave disc engine, a new implementation of wave rotor technology, was earlier developed by the Michigan State group in collaboration with researchers from the Warsaw Institute of Technology. The WDG also can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 95 percent in comparison to modern internal combustion vehicle engines.

The new ECONAMIQ technology builds on existing concepts such as cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing with a unique patented combination of routing gasses for increased system efficiency. Researchers at the Dalian University of Technology have proposed a novel method to control premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) phasing in internal combustion engines in all load operations. It compresses the pressurized gas produced by exhaust gas turbocharger, comprising fresh air and exhaust gas introduced from the EGR valve.
