Argonne Study Examines Impact of Real World Drive Cycles on Efficiency and Cost of Different PHEV Configurations

Green Car Congress

In the segment of the study presented, the Argonne team modeled four PHEV configurations: an input power split with a fixed ratio between the electric machine and the transmission (e.g., Camry hybrid) PHEV with a 4 kWh and an 8 kWh pack; and a series hybrid (extended-range electric vehicle, e.g., Volt) with a 12 kWh and a 16 kWh pack.

Using the PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to Transition Society Seamlessly and Profitably From Fossil Fuel to 100% Renewable Energy

Green Car Congress

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.)

DOE awarding up to $12M to support development of static and possibly quasi-dynamic wireless charging for plug-in vehicles

Green Car Congress

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) used in the demonstrations must incorporate electrical energy storage sufficient to provide at least 10 miles (16 km) of all-electric range, i.e., cumulative vehicle movement with the engine off, on the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS).

SAE REX: PHEVs and REEVs could open door for advanced combustion regime engines

Green Car Congress

The REEV or PHEV also may present opportunities for more novel power sources such as turbines (Wrightspeed), fuel cell stacks (Nissan) or aluminum-air batteries (Phinergy and Arconic), speakers suggested. If PHEVs are going to play a big role, what is the fuel source for that? There is a very strong case to be made for that PHEV world.
