2022 Jetta and Jetta GLI—HP & MPG. Offered with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, the fuel efficiency has been increased up-to 29 mpg city/43 highway/34 combined with the manual. Topping 40 mpg on the highway is a big plus for this compact sedan, though we can’t talk how it felt on the road–yet.

In 240 miles driving around Southern California we averaged 23 mpg, but in a 100-mile run with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we averaged 31.2 mpg, exceeding the EPA figure. Then, for comparison take a spin in the Mustang GT or Mach 1.

Note: For our purposes here, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) does not have gears, so is not part of this comparison. The EPA rated the Santa Cruz’ fuel economy at 19 mpg city/27 highway/22 combined. 4-cylinder that gets 21 mpg city/26 highway/23 combined with front-wheel drive, and 21/27/23 mpg with AWD.

The EPA has rated fuel economy at 22 mpg city/26 highway/24 combined. The speed-sensitive electric power steering was too light at low speeds, but tightened up as speeds increased. Our focus is on vehicles that offer the best fuel economy in their class, which leads us to emphasize electric cars, plug-in hybrids, hybrids and diesels.
