The BMW Mini E has hit the streets. Barely one year ago, word surfaced that an electric Mini was in the works. More money was probably spent advertising the car than went into the electric Mini program. The ZEV program is meant to commercialize ZEVs. In the case of the electric Mini, that means no backseat.

The remarkable advantage for BMW customers in using BMW i3 batteries as a plug and play storage application is the ability to tap into an alternative resource for residential and commercial backup power, thus using renewable energy much more efficiently, and enabling additional revenues from the energy market.

BMW has recognized that they simply teed up GM and Nissan to benefit from the MINI E experience. Today they announced officially that MINI E "pioneers" will be able to extend their leases until 2011. Will MINI E drivers be so loyal to BMW they'll forgo the opportunity to actually purchase a plug-in car?

Ongoing field tests involving more than 600 MINI E cars, including 450 in the US, have already provided knowledge about the demands on future electrically powered production vehicles. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are on their way with new innovations seemingly announced all the time. Plug In America has created a new website dedicated to keeping track of plug-ins, whether they are hybrids or pure electric vehicles. Some of the vehicles listed are questionable.
