The first plant under that agreement (and the company’s first commercial unit overall) will be located in Columbus, MS and funded by the proceeds of a $75-million loan from the State of Mississippi. This project is designed to complement an earlier Mississippi agreement, which requires KiOR to build three plants in Mississippi before 2015.

Industry has been exploring a number of different pathways to convert algae biomass into energy including lipid extraction (LE) and subsequent transesterification to produce biodiesel; direct ethanol production; heterotrophic metabolism; or thermochemical conversion of the entire algae cell.

Sapphire Energy is now producing crude oil daily from algae biomass cultivated and harvested at the company’s Green Crude Farm, located in Columbus, New Mexico. Once the study is finished, the companies will work together to complete the EPA certification process to register a new fuel product entering the market.
