Fortunately plenty of reputable organisations have examined the issues surrounding CO2 emissions for EVs. But for each country the result is the same: the production of the EV emits more CO2 than the equivalent petrol-powered alternative. But over the life of the vehicle the ledger very much swings in the favour of EVs over ICE.

Shipping is responsible for an estimated 100 crore tonnes of CO2 per year, and 10% of that is shipping oil. of electricity comes from sources that emit no CO2. And if the EV is powered with clean electricity, it is clean from start to finish. In India 39.1% In Europe it is even better at 56%.

Nuclear waste is a problem much harder to solve than CO2, and dams have quite an impact in the environment. :p Neutral Elora HRanma @ Apr 20th 2009 8:14AM @catachip: I wouldnt say that hydroelectric or nuclear plants produce 0 emissions. Simply, those are not the main concern for campaigners right now.

Generating electricity from wind and geothermal rather than a CO2 producing sources would help alleviate that problem. The intolerable act is to pretend that making cars into plug-ins will reduce CO2. I am reluctant to say "spend government money" and I am not sure if it would be the right idea. Many others are not so careful.
