CESifo: EVs not the best option for reduction in on-road CO2 in Germany given power mix

Green Car Congress

According to a new study published by the ifo Institue Center for Economic Studies (CESifo) in Germany, EVs will barely help cut CO 2 emissions in the country over the coming years, as the introduction of electric vehicles does not necessarily lead to a reduction in CO 2 emissions from road traffic given the current power generation mix.

Tesla Model Y converted into green hydrogen car to show “Hyper Hybrid” innovations

Teslarati

German Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek recently unveiled an example of a “hyper hybrid” vehicle powered by synthetic methanol, which is based on “green hydrogen” technologies. But while the idea to produce a climate-friendly car is admirable, the vehicle Germany used for the project was quite questionable.

$12M German project to develop technology for syngas production from CO2 and H2; new hydrogen production method

Green Car Congress

In the first step, an novel high-temperature technology will process natural gas to obtain hydrogen and carbon. In a subsequent catalytic process step, the hydrogen is then reacted with large volumes of CO 2 , also from other industrial processes, to produce syngas. Compared to other processes, this technology produces much less CO 2.

U-Mich researcher’s first-principles analysis challenges conventional carbon accounting for biofuels; implications for climate policy

Green Car Congress

For biofuels, because biogenic carbon is automatically credited within a product lifecycle, the boundary effectively excludes vehicle end-use CO 2 emissions. In a paper that could have a significant impact on climate policies for transportation fuels, Dr. John M. System boundaries (red line) schematic for liquid fuel carbon balance.
