The first of a planned fleet of eight hydrogen fuel cell buses in London will start operating on 18 December. The buses will form the only hydrogen bus fleet in the UK and the largest currently in Europe. The buses are joining a fleet which also includes 100 hybrid buses.

The mayors of London, Paris, Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Quito, Vancouver, Mexico City, Milan, Seattle, Auckland and Cape Town have pledged to procure only zero-emission buses from 2025 and ensure that a major area of their city is zero emission by 2030. Lead by example by procuring zero emission vehicles for city fleets.

British Airways, in partnership with the Solena Group , will establish Europe’s first plant for sustainable jet-fuel and plans to use the low-carbon fuel to power part of its fleet from 2014. Four sites in the east of London are among those under consideration for the construction of the bio-jet fuel plant.

Four additional cities—Amsterdam, Lima, Catalonia (Barcelona) and Rome— signed up to the Global Clean Bus Declaration at the 1 st global Clean Bus Summit in London. The Mayor confirmed that all new buses joining central London’s fleet are now ULEZ-compliant, delivering important air quality improvements now.
