This is a move that GM, Ford and whatever’s left of Chrysler should have made, but it’s too creative, too bold and too American for any of those legacy car companies to pull off in the 21st century. This looks like what would have been the plucky, American entrepreneurial spirit move to me.

The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet. Ford , Chrysler , Volvo Nissan , Subaru and VW have all indicated they will be bringing plug-in hybrids to the showroom floor for sale within the next few years. Toyota also is developing a plug-in hybrid, expected on the road by 2010.

A number of other plug-in hybrids, including models from GM, Chrysler, and Toyota, are scheduled to come out in the next few years. The Karma, a luxury four-passenger sedan, can be recharged by plugging it in; it can then be driven on power from a battery alone for 50 miles. The Karma can be refueled quickly.)

Here’s what the brainiacs at General Motors sent the premier EV car conference on the West Coast. At least GM sent this nifty printed banner explaining all about the new J1772 industry standard recharging plug. Ford and whatever it is they call Chrysler this week didn’t even bother to show up.

Daimler/Mercedes Took over Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter PHEV program. Volvo Ford-owned company exploring PHEVs "ReCharge" flex-fuel series 60-mile concept PHEV w/wheel motors. Showed BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS series PHEV concept in December 08. Blue Concept PHEV Van with diesel or hydrogen fuel cells and rooftop photovoltaic.
