Volvo is taking the next step in its electrification strategy by producing test electric vehicles with range extenders. The concepts all use three-cylinder flex fuel (gasoline and E85) engines to complement the front-wheel electric drive. Two of the solutions are based on the Volvo C30 Electric.

The Fisker Karma plug-in extended range electric vehicle ( earlier post ) made its public driving debut over the weekend, 19 months after being introduced as a concept. The Fisker Karma can reach 60 mph (97 km/h) in six seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph (201 km/h).

The vehicle was developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), making it the first production electric vehicle created by a Chinese joint venture.
