Identical total annual emissions of sulfate and black carbon aerosol from eight major past, present, and potential future emitting regions (a) result in global-mean cooling spanning a 14x range (b, y-axis), differing substantially in the degree to which that cooling is felt in the emitting region (b, x-axis). This work is part of a larger $1.5-million

USGS scientist concludes that anthropogenic CO2 emissions dwarf those from volcanoes

Green Car Congress

On average, human activities put out in just three to five days the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide that volcanoes produce globally each year, according to Terrance Gerlach of the US Geological Survey (USGS). Gerlach used the figure of about one-quarter of a billion metric tons of volcanic carbon dioxide per year to make his comparisons.

When peat swamps are drained for agriculture, the peat begins to decompose, and is an enormous source of carbon emissions. Mha (20%) of the peatlands of Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo in 2010, surpassing the area of Belgium and causing an annual carbon emission from peat decomposition of 230–310 Mt CO 2 e.
