Because of their chemical makeup, when the rocks are exposed to carbon dioxide, they react to form common limestone and chalk in a process called mineral carbonation. Some also occur in the interior, including Montana. Combining rocks and carbon dioxide could provide an added benefit, as Krevor points out.

The Lignite Field Validation Test is being conducted by the Plains CO 2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership, one of seven regional partnerships under DOE’s Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership Program. In addition to evaluating the lignite seam’s CO2 storage potential, the enhancement to coalbed methane extraction will also be evaluated.

The Plains CO 2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership, one of seven members of the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships program, has begun collecting core samples from a new characterization well near Spectra Energy’s Fort Nelson natural gas processing plant in British Columbia, Canada.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 19 projects to enhance the capability to simulate, track, and evaluate the potential risks of carbon dioxide storage in geologic formations. Researchers will develop systems for tagging CO 2 with carbon-14 at atmospheric level (1 part per trillion) and measuring the carbon-14 CO 2 levels.
