The Supreme Court of the US (SCOTUS) has ruled in West Virginia v. The issue here is whether restructuring the Nation’s overall mix of electricity generation, to transition from 38% coal to 27% coal by 2030, can be the “best system of emission reduction” within the meaning of Section 111. New York v. 144, 187 (1992).

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a cooperative agreement to American Electric Power Service Corporation (AEP) for the Mountaineer Commercial Scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project to design, construct, and operate a system that will capture and store approximately 1.5 million tons per year of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ).

The Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), led by Battelle, has completed its Phase II projects to evaluate storage of carbon dioxide in its nine-state region. The Phase II work helped identify both the opportunities and challenges for carbon sequestration and provided direction for future efforts.
