It has an interesting gizmo where the 800 V DC gets converted to 230 V AC – and can be accessed via a normal 15 A plug. kWh of juice. I had recently installed the PakTrakr system, so I cleared out the serial logging attachment and started collecting data. After the car sat for 20 minutes, I had enough juice to get to the auto parts place. After poking around under the hood, I also found a critical resistor that enabled the DC-DC converter had broken off.

Plus installation. If a complete overnight charge is the goal, 120V will still suffice for a Volt, but a 240V EVSE will be essential for most who buy an all-electric car. My installation was pretty simple, so it cost me nothing. They’ve kept my LEAF juiced, after all. Need it cost this much? However, I remain unconcerned.

He wasn’t in uniform, so I figured he was another of those early adopter techie types buying EVs. We chatted while he finished charging his LEAF at the recently installed Quick Charger at the new Market Street Whole Foods in San Francisco. That’s why I ran into him at the Whole Food DC charger. I''ll call him Officer Bill.
