Xcel Energy has launched a new pilot for customers of five major automakers to make it easier for consumers to make the switch to electric vehicles in Colorado and to charge their EVs at times when renewable energy production is high and demand on the energy grid is low. Costs for purchasing an eligible Level 2 charger can also be included.

In recent testimony, Nuvve CEO Gregory Poilasne told the lawmakers that bidirectional charging can reduce the total cost of EV ownership, and that it’s essential for integrating more renewable energy into the grid. Then it takes the DC from the bus, or car, and converts it back to AC to provide power for the grid. That’s one way.

Bidirectional charging (two-way charging) allows energy to flow both ways: from the grid into the car, and from the vehicle to the grid (V2G) or to your home (V2H). More EVs mean more energy consumption and, eventually, increased pressure on our grids. In the end, it’s a win-win for the planet, the grid and the consumer.
