At the conclusion of the International Negotiating Committee on Mercury ( INC5 ) meeting in Geneva ( earlier post ), nations agreed on a global, legally-binding treaty to prevent mercury emissions and releases. These include: Batteries, except for button cell batteries used in implantable medical devices.

The fifth and final session of negotiations on the establishment of an international mercury convention—International Negotiating Committee on Mercury (INC5)—is taking place this coming week in Geneva. UNEP produced its first Global Mercury Assessment in 2002 and a subsequent study in 2007.

It’s now or never if humans hope to prevent the mercury from increasing by 1.5° They also benefit EV owners, as batteries charge best in dry conditions —the panels would block the rain. Engineers and legal minds will continue to address the problems keeping such facilities from proliferating. The power potntial is there.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. PHEVs with "Good Enough to Get Started" batteries. The nonprofit CalCars does conversions to demonstrate new designs and provide a platform for different batteries; we dont sell conversions. So far, most start as hybrids.

The Forest Service’s Northern Research Station has begun research activities, funded by current appropriations, directed to further mercury-sulfur interaction research and mitigation to lessen the health impacts of mercury by interrupting the biochemical process between sulfur and mercury.
