The organiser of the $10million contest to develop next-generation green cars or vehicles has trimmed the number of contestants to 43 teams from 10 countries which have passed the vehicle design phase. Other teams have presented vehicles powered by biofuels, petrol and other fuels.

A unique joint project between carmaker Volvo and Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall is to see the production of battery-powered Volvos featuring plug-in hybrid technology as early as 2012. Volvo Cars also have FlexiFuel models which are powered by E85 (85 percent renewable bioethanol and 15 per cent petrol).

Other detail changes from 6th April 2011 include: Drivers of Euro IV diesel cars registered before the 1st January 2006 are currently taxed at the same percentage rate as drivers of cars fitted with a petrol engine. The taxation of these cars will be subject to the 3% uplift for diesel cars from this date.

System power output has been increased by 22 per cent, from 109 to 134bhp (110 to 136 DIN hp) and, with performance to match a conventional 2.0-litre litre petrol vehicle, new Prius will accelerate from nought to 62mph in 10.4 litre VVT-i Atkinson cycle petrol engine replaces the 1.5-litre Power Control Unit.
