During the serial media launch events for the Chevrolet Volt, GM provided more detail (subsequent to the completion of related patent work) on the novel drive architecture applied in their first extended range electric vehicle to enhance the efficiency of both the battery electric and extended-range driving modes.

The vehicle marks a number of firsts for Infiniti: first range-extender electric driveline; first mid-ship sports cart; first car the company has developed in Europe—and the first car it has built as part of a UK-government sponsored technology initiative. Recharge time from 13 amps takes 10 hours, or 6 hours at 16 amps.

Rather than using battery power, the application allows owners to start the Volt remotely to pre-condition the interior temperature using power from the grid. This preserves the battery charge for driving without gasoline. The Volt is an electric vehicle with extended-range capability.

The Chevrolet Volt’s all-new second-generation Voltec extended-range electric propulsion system ( earlier post ) delivers 53 miles (85 km) of all-electric range, based on EPA testing. Chevrolet expects many next-generation Volt owners will use power solely from their batteries for more than 90% of trips.

Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. GM calls the Volt an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. It is different from a plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, which runs on both battery power and gasoline.
