Running on 87 octane, the front wheels (all-wheel drive is not available) are driven through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has five driver selectable drive modes of Eco, Normal, Sport, Slippery and Snow/Sand. We twice topped-off the battery and were able to first go 39 and then 41 miles on pure electricity.

As she drives her electric vehicle to her mother’s house, Monique’s battery gauge indicates that it’s time to reenergize. The battery in her EV is a variation on the flow battery , a design in which spent electrolyte is replaced rather than recharged. A battery that mitigates these problems is DARPA’s objective.

In a pre-response to that speech, having successfully advocated for plug-in hybrids like the forthcoming Chevy Volt, we propose that the President follow that speech up with a “realistic and conservative” roadmap to halve our oil use in 10 years. Oil is holding us all hostage, economically and physically. Finally, it’s time to begin.

With speed limited to 110 km/h (68 mph) and acceleration close to the classic 2CV model, the concept car gains a wider range and significantly improved battery lifespan. As a result, its all-electric powertrain needs only a 40kWh battery to deliver a target range of up to 400 km (248 miles).
