Running on 87 octane, the front wheels (all-wheel drive is not available) are driven through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that has five driver selectable drive modes of Eco, Normal, Sport, Slippery and Snow/Sand. For increased recharging, there is an “L” button on the gear selector wheel.

In a pre-response to that speech, having successfully advocated for plug-in hybrids like the forthcoming Chevy Volt, we propose that the President follow that speech up with a “realistic and conservative” roadmap to halve our oil use in 10 years. Oil is holding us all hostage, economically and physically. Finally, it’s time to begin.

The battery in her EV is a variation on the flow battery , a design in which spent electrolyte is replaced rather than recharged. Importantly, the nanofluids are engineered to remain suspended indefinitely, unlike other suspensions—for instance, sand in water. The recharging could also be done at a service station or in the EV itself.

By limiting top speed to 110km/h (68 mph) to maximize efficiency, excellent consumption of 10kWh/100km is realistic, and recharging from 20% to 80% takes just 23 minutes. As a result, its all-electric powertrain needs only a 40kWh battery to deliver a target range of up to 400 km (248 miles).

3 David Herron said on March 16th, 2009 at 12:31 am Fast recharge will require huge power levels. To recharge 20 kilowatt-hours of capacity in 5 minutes requires 240 kilowatts of electricity. But besides that, the only electronics potentially benefiting from THIS breakthrough are RCs and household rechargeable batteries.
