A study by an international team of researchers, led by Drew Shindell of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, has identified 14 measures targeting methane and black carbon (BC) emissions that could reduce projected global mean warming ~0.5°C Their paper is published in the journal Science.

If the emissions gap is not closed by 2030, the report says, it is extremely unlikely that the goal of holding global warming to well below 2 ˚C can still be reached. Given currently available carbon budget estimates, the available global carbon budget for 1.5 ˚C GtCO 2 direct emissions and 0.28 C also on the table.

A team of researchers from the US and India has found that airborne black carbon aerosols, or soot, from India is a major contributor to the decline in snow and ice cover on the glaciers in the Himalayan mountains. Black carbon alone contributes at least 30% of this sum. Change in annual linear snow cover from 1990 to 2001.
