MG 1 starts the gasoline engine and charges the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while MG2 drives the front wheels and regenerates the battery during braking and coasting, and MGR drives the rear wheels and also regenerates the battery. The EPA rates fuel economy at 31 mpg city/28 highway/30 combined.

The US auto industry, via the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, is lining up to support a new national, harmonized program to reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption that President Obama will announce on Tuesday, 19 May. At the North American International Auto Show in January 2009, Chrysler had introduced two new EV concepts and updates on three earlier EV concepts developed by the ENVI group. As outlined in the plan, Chrysler is putting a more immediate focus on downsizing its engines and improving fuel economy across the entire portfolio.

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. Consumer Reports rates the Buick Enclave higher than vehicles from Toyota, Volvo, Infiniti, Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz in the Luxury- Full Size SUV category. It also offers better fuel economy than the M5.
