Embracing the outcome of the German National Diesel Forum earlier this week ( earlier post ), the Volkswagen Group announced that it will offer a trade-in incentive for Euro 1 - Euro 4 diesel models which will apply across all brands in the Group. The auto industry and the Federal government will each contribute €250 million.

During the pandemic, Volkswagen fell behind in the Chinese auto market as companies like BYD, Nio, and Tesla took over, with the competition nearly doubling the market’s EV and hybrid offerings (via Bloomberg ). Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted the urgency of the situation at the Münich Car Show last week.

Diesel-only vehicles — already a fast diminishing slice of the market — fell in volume by over 13% YoY, to 5,825 units, and just 4.4.% The UK car market saw plugin electric vehicles take 21.9% year on year.

The UK’s auto market saw plugin electric vehicles take 39.4% Overall auto volumes were up 18% year on year in December, but still down compared to pre-2020 norms. This comes against a background of overall auto sales down by 2.0% Full year 2022 diesel-only vehicles’ share amounted to 5.1%, down from 8.2% year on year.
