Here in the UK we’re so downtrodden by extortionate petrol prices that the prospect of driving fuel efficient green cars carries obvious appeal. However, what about our US neighbours where ‘gas’ prices are distinctly lower and so-called muscle cars are seen as almost iconic and part of the culture?

Having already proven its commitment to recycling (see article) Ford is now looking to make a broader effort in examining the greenhouse gas emissions within the auto industry. It will survey 35 top global suppliers – ranging from companies that make seats and steering systems to tyres and metal components – on their energy use.

So it seems that the programme is helping to get America’s dirtiest cars off the road, but that still hasn’t convinced some environmentalists. Perhaps what we must remember when evaluating the scheme is that its goals are short-term – a welcome boost for the auto industry and greener buying habits for the US public.
