An IntelliChoice.com survey finds that most 2009 US hybrid and clean diesel cars, trucks and SUVs deliver a lower total cost of ownership compared to gasoline versions of the same (or comparable) vehicles. The long-time knock against “green” cars, trucks and SUVs is that their sticker prices do not justify the gas savings.

Given the specific barriers, suggests author Andrea Beltramello, there is a role for government to support the development and diffusion of green vehicles, including through policies to strengthen the markets for green cars. Alternative fuels include biofuels, natural gas, hydrogen and electricity from the grid.

Loveland is now aiming to convert all of its light-duty fleet vehicles that work within a close distance of the city to EVs. Its efforts to incorporate alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) into its fleet began in 2002 with an initial purchase of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), mainly the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape hybrid.
