Tesla will have a new addition to its CO2 pool in Jaguar Land Rover, which will help the latter company avoid hefty fines for not reaching target emissions goals set by the European Union. Schmidt writes that it would likely hurt the company’s financials to scrap its higher profitability vehicles just to meet emissions targets.

The European Parliament and the Council have reached provisional agreement on a regulation setting, for the first time in the EU, strict CO 2 emission standards for trucks. Under the agreement, emissions from new trucks will have to be 15% lower by 2025 and 30% lower in 2030 compared to 2019 emissions.

In the third set of measures designed to implement the “Europe on the Move” goals of modernizing the transport system, the European Commission is proposing a 15% reduction in new heavy-duty truck CO 2 emissions by 2025 from 2019 levels. For 2030, the Commission proposed an indicative reduction target of at least 30%.

Technically, Tesla has been selling these credits to Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). It was announced earlier this week by Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares that the company would no longer need to purchase the regulatory credits from Tesla as it could reach CO2 emissions goals on its own. To be precise, my mistake.

The principle of continuous improvement will remain at the heart of the strategy to reduce CO 2 emissions and increase resource efficiency.
