Researchers at the University of Georgia and North Carolina State University have used a unique temperature-dependent approach in engineering a hyperthermophilic archaeon, Pyrococcus furiosus to be able to use CO 2 and hydrogen to produce 3-hydroxypropionic acid, one of the top 12 industrial chemical building blocks. The grant, one of the largest ever awarded to the university, will allow researchers to advance the scientific understanding of naturally occurring methane hydrate so that its resource potential and environmental implications can be fully understood. That is more than 250 times the amount of natural gas used in the United States in 2013.
