Ballard Power Systems and Anglo American Platinum, the world’s largest primary producer of platinum, launched a field trial of a methanol-fueled home generator system in an off-grid residential application. Monthly delivery of liquid methanol fuel to an external storage tank will enable uninterrupted primary power to these homes.

Ballard Power Systems signed an agreement to acquire key assets from IdaTech, including its fuel cell product lines for backup power applications, distributor and customer relationships, as well as a license to intellectual property. IdaTech supplies both hydrogen- and methanol-fueled systems.

Ballard Power Systems has shipped its 500 th methanol-fueled telecom backup power system, since expanding its product line in August 2012 via the acquisition of key assets from IdaTech. Tata Motors showcased its alternate fuel technology capability at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2012 by displaying four concepts: the Tata Nano CNG; the Tata Indigo Manza diesel-electric hybrid; the Tata Starbus Fuel Cell (hydrogen); and the Tata Magic Iris CNG. CNG kit components have been applied to the bi-fuel CNG Tata Nano.
