The city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) is launching an electric taxi program, through a partnership between the Rio de Janeiro City Government, Nissan do Brasil Automóveis (NBA) and Petrobras Distribuidora. In the first phase, two Nissan LEAF taxis will be available in Rio. By the end of the year, 13 more units will be added to the fleet.

Express del Futuro, a partner-operator of Transmilenio, and BYD unveiled plans for an electric bus fleet in Bogotá, Colombia. In December 2012, BYD Ltd and Praco Didacol (BYD’s Colombian distribution partner) announced that BYD e6s would being placed into Taxi service in Q1 2013 in the Colombian capital as a pilot.

Ford Motor Company is unveiling the all-electric version of the Ford Transit Connect at the Chicago Auto Show; the small electric van will be in fleet operators’ hands later this year, according to the company. A transportable cord that works with both types of outlets will be available for recharging at both kinds of locations.

UK retailer Sainsbury Online, which uses the Smith Electric Vehicles Edison electric vans for home shopping delivery in London, is ordering another 50 Smiths electric vans for its fleet. With 100 Smith Electric Vehicles electric commercial vehicles, TNT has the largest fleet of new technology electric delivery trucks in the world.

The pure electric vehicles, for reserve, must carry heavy and expensive batteries—which add expense as well as weight—and must have access to high-powered recharging stations [ 1 ]. Furthermore, even the older version PHEV can recharge at a slow rate using local solar, wind, water-derived or other net zero CO 2 fuel.
