The system converted AC grid power to DC power to charge the battery and could also convert DC power from the battery to AC power that could feed both external stand-alone loads and the grid. And the auto industry had just canceled the battery EV.

The grid today could handle many millions of EVs charging late at night when rates are lowest. By 2012, we should have made some progress on this, just in time to re-elect Obama to his second term. To be honest, we’ll be very lucky to see that many. Smart meters and electric cars: a match made in efficiency.
