The 1,900 flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles from GSA will bring the total number of alternate fuel-capable vehicles in the Postal Service fleet to more than 43,000 (about 19.6%). The Postal Service has increased alternative fuel use by 41% since 2006, and plans to reduce petroleum use by 20% over the next five years.

Results of a survey released by Maritz Research demonstrates that while US consumer awareness about alternative fuel vehicles continues to grow, only about one in five consumers state they are “very familiar” with any alternative-fuel technologies.

Ontario, Canada individuals, businesses, and organizations that purchase or lease a new plug-in hybrid electric or battery electric vehicle after 1 July 2010 may be eligible for a rebate between C$5,000 and C$8,500 (US$4,900-8,300). The car, expected to run 40 miles without recharging, will cost less than $30,000. "If If they were able to get 30,000 to 60,000 on the road in a year, it would be a huge leap in technology ," Brett Smith, an alternative-fuel analyst at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, told Bloomberg.
