The findings cast doubt on whether biofuels produced from corn residue can be used to meet federal mandates for cellulosic biofuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 60% compared to gasoline. These emissions add an average of 50–70 g CO 2 per megajoule of biofuel (range 30–90) and are insensitive to the fraction of residue removed.
