Study finds older drivers more likely to buy new vehicles

A new study by Michael Sivak, research professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), found that in 2011, the peak probability of buying a new vehicle per driver in the US was among those between 55 and 64 years of age—a shift from four years earlier, when that peaked with the 35-to-44-year-old age group.

IIHS: small car driver death rates remain high

Small cars and minicars accounted for 15 of the 20 models with the highest death rates for model year 2017, while nearly half of the 20 models with the lowest death rates were luxury SUVs. Very large SUVs have the lowest overall death rate of any vehicle category with 15 fatalities per million registered vehicle years.

ORNL researchers quantify the effect of increasing highway speed on fuel economy

The study includes various sizes of sedans, wagons, and SUVs, as well as pickup trucks, minivans and a few “muscle” and sports cars. Analysis has focused on speeds of 50, 60, 70 and 80 mph.
