Alsym Energy, which was founded in April 2015, has developed a non-flammable, high-performance rechargeable battery chemistry that’s lithium- and cobalt-free.

The flexibility of the process allows for production of lithium and compounds in a variety of form factors, for use in primary and rechargeable batteries. The process does not require mercury, again reducing raw material costs and eliminating containment costs. The room temperature process requires minimal electricity.

The earliest electric car batteries were disposable and were disposed of when they ran out of power, so there was no concept of recharging them.
