According to the MTA, the average speed of cars in Manhattan is around 7 mph (12 km/h). Or better yet, an electric bike.

While powerful "Class 3" models especially are trying the patience of pedestrians in crowded cities like New York, with blazing assisted speeds approaching 30 mph, e-bikes are now front-and-center in discussions of future urban mobility. Hub motors are relatively affordable, low-maintenance, mass produced by the millions.

In Utah the posted limit is 80 mph and for many drivers that was only a suggestion. We set the cruise control to 72 mph when on the freeway. Gasoline fueled vehicles require tune-ups, oil, transmission servicing and other typical maintenance and costs. All seem perfectly comfortable in the shared experience.

Despite having seen them around for years, they were models I had long assumed would be marginally better than the atrocious three-wheeled motorcycles offered by Harley-Davidson.

If the speed difference between vehicles is less than 9 mph, City Safety helps drivers avoid some crashes altogether. It’s not designed to work at speeds faster than 19 mph.
