A new analysis of the real-world usage of more than 100,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles shows a large deviation between on-road CO 2 emissions and fuel efficiency and the official vehicle type-approval values. The real-world share of electric driving for PHEVs, on average, is about half the share considered in the type-approval values.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

DOE’s investment strategy does not preclude the market from selecting mild or strong hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, or even fuel cell vehicles as the end point for electrification. DOE will focus on partial electrification because hybrid electric (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEVs) can access existing infrastructure.

In Li-ion batteries, Li ions (Li + ) leave the cathode during charging and move through the electrolyte and separator to intercalate into the anode. As the technology gets fixed, the anode is more of an issue related to fast charge. Generic Li-ion cell and various component technologies. The reverse happens on discharge.
