LG Chem has entered a four-year supply deal to provide lithium ion batteries to Eaton Corp. Representatives said the South Korean firm will first begin by supplying batteries for commercial HEVs and then expand its supply for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which have batteries that can be recharged when connected to a power outlet.

Hyundai’s position on fuel cell vehicles is that they alleviate the limitations of traditional battery-electric vehicles with respect to range and refueling (recharging) time. Within the group, Kia, which is set up in North America as a competitor to Hyundai, is focusing on battery-electric vehicles.

Kia is using lithium-ion polymer battery cells supplied by SK Inovation in the battery pack for the new Soul EV ( earlier post ). Kia Motors America (KMA) introduced the 2015 Soul EV at the Chicago Auto Show. Scheduled to go on sale in the third quarter of 2014, the Soul EV will be Kia’s first battery-electric car sold in the US.
