BEVs saw pull-forward sales, with volume around 2.5x their previous monthly record, ahead of new weight taxes, and VAT taxes. Pull forward ahead of tax changes.

Although Tesla gets the headlines (and stock price boost), Nissan and Chevrolet make the sales. Plug-in vehicle sales are indeed increasing, with the LEAF and Volt each selling about 2500 units in June 2013. Simple access to power while at work is a tremendous additional incentive for PEV sales of these lower-range cars.

Second, and more crucial from a policy perspective, is that to justify the subsidies and tax incentives lavished on plug-in hybrids as a way to reduce vehicular emissions of carbon dioxide, they have to be plugged in. Sales: high. Plug-in hybrids that never connect to the grid might as well not have a plug at all. Data: no dice.

You’re allowed to reclaim 100% of the vehicle’s cost against corporation tax in the first year, although it’s worth noting you must repay the tax on the car’s sale price if you sell it later on or return it to the lease company. It was only around 15 years ago that EVs could barely travel 50 miles before running out of juice.
