Nissan’s Leaf stood alone as an EV. Good examples of all-new electric cars are the Nissan Leaf battery-electric and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid , which both debuted in 2010 as 2011 models. Rivian will be delivering all-electric pickups and SUVs very soon. An EV appears in a sub-brand, but not really part of it.

The newly-arrived Tesla Model Y was also comfortably the country’s top selling mid-sized SUV priced over $60,000. Tesla reported 1017 Model Ys as being sold, making it the 12th best selling SUV on the market, outselling stalwarts such as the Honda CR-V (781), Subaru Forester (580), Kia Seltos (869) and Toyota C-HR (533) in the process.

The SUV number isn’t quite as impressive but still shows there’s increasing EV interest. percent of the 574,632 SUVs sold in 2022 were electric. Considering there are no EVs on offer to tackle the more than 50,000 Toyota Prados, LandCruisers, Ford Everests and Nissan Patrols that dominate off-road, it’s an impressive feat.
